MCM mini meet #25 :: Docklands Undercover

It’s been a while since we have attended such a big car meet! Held in docklands Victoria, in a spot where only three years ago the police blocked off the road, car park and all exits to create a massive defect station. Thankfully that did not happen this time around.

It wasn’t only humans in attendance! there were at least five k9’s that we know of including this husky! I arrived early to beat the traffic not knowing exactly how big this meet was going to get.

At first it was raining lightly and I thought this may stop many from bringing out their pride and joy. Regardless the cars started to stream in like its was boxing day sales.

Most creative exhaust award goes to this little Nissan micra! unfortunately it didn’t sound like star’s not that I know what stars sound like!

This has to be one of the best combo’s I have seen on this model of Celica ..period. The wheels work well and the ride height is spot on!

A lot of attendees drove straight past the meet point opting to park outside the area just in case the boys in blue turned up. Luckily there was no trouble and everyone behaved themselves.

Amongst the sea of cars many were showing of their ability to ride static at dangerously low heights, the others that were riding on air came in low and scraping.

Suddenly a wild DeLorean appeared! iconic film cars are in hot demand right now but the DeLorean is one car that will never loose its luster.

These are no angel eyes, they are straight up devil eyes! happily sitting upon an aggressive set of Work Meisters.

An odd couple I found posing together was this WRX and its brother from another mother. Every so often I came across some cars posing in the spot light, waiting for admires.

With so many quality cars it was hard to know what to take a closer look at. Yet when this BMW rolled in everyone took notice! heads snapped so quick it was like a thunder clap.

There were so many nice cars on show that some super clean cars got ignored. I caught a few hiding between cars and people.

Look closely and you will see some interesting features on this R34. Custom LEDS built into the front bar, mirror and shaved lines combined to make this R34 one of a kind.

Vinyl warp is taking centre stage lately, this 86 was no exception. The brightness of this blue almost paralysed a few people! The way this vinyl refracted light was very impressive! to say the least.

I was very surprised to come across such a well modified WRX. With a serious hint of stance and nothing but quality parts decorating this sexy Subaru. It was hard to not be entranced by its beauty.

Tucked, sitting only millimetres off the ground. Dressed in white with a few hints of red and gold this show stopper continued to stun onlookers for hours.

The king of the streets! the mighty Nissan GTR. This car meet had more variety than a two dollar shop. With super-cars, classic cars, track cars and daily drivers what more could you ask for.

Not all the cars where lowered / modified. Some classic cars had entered under the radar. This VW beetle was super straight and in perfect original condition.

A throwback to late eighties touring car livery’s, this E30 was looking the part and turning some heads.

Another car that pulled a crowd was this super sexy RX7. As soon as it arrived people were climbing over each other to take a closer look.

Packed and ready to go? or just trying too look part of the scene? Regardless its an interesting approach to a style that has been creeping its way into the Melbourne euro groups lately.

With 4 levels full of cars there was a hell of a line to exit the car park. Only a consistent trail of brake lights could be seen for at least 30 thirty minutes while the crowd of cars left the huge car park. The Melbourne car meet group continues to build momentum whilst not compromising on quality. We hope this trend continues, it almost seems as thou MCM is a breeding ground for 100MM entrants and that’s ok in our book!

CLUB ITR :: EP3 VS DC5

This meet was weeks in the making and the Club ITR members organised a meet for both EP3 Type R Civics and DC5 Integras.
Bad weather clashed with the planned date (but this is Melbourne, so can we really expect anythign else?) and it was postponed for a few more weeks. So fast forward to the new date and this is what happened…

I met up with a small group of Civic owners in Melbourne’s South East and with around four white EP3’s we were off to a good start!
We had hoped for good numbers but we were very pleased with what we saw when we arrived.

On the way to the meet, we managed a couple of rolling shots.

This was my taxi to the meet, thanks to the owner Chris for allowing me to jump in.

When we arrived there were two DC5 Integra’s waiting for us.

Within minutes, more cars were joining the group and soon we were struggling to find a spot for everyone to park.

This Civic is certainly one to divide people, owner Peter is set to change the wheels after having had a little bit too much attention from all the wrong people.
I won’t give away what he is planing on getting but it will certainly make a lot of people happy!

With the original meet point being less than desirable and having such a good turnout, there was now way too many cars for the makeshift car park.
Luckily only a stones throw away there was an empty lot so the cars quickly moved in…

After some formations were set up, it was time to start shooting like crazy, so every man and his DSLR got to work.

One more black Integra and we could have made it a double stuff Oreo cookie!!

What is so interesting about this particular engine bay?.. How about a supercharged K20!

Enkei RPF1’s set this white Integra off!

The setting sun and small flowers shooting up from the cracks in the concrete all made for some interesting photos.

This Integra had quite the crowd with the hood/hatch popped.
Hiding inside were plenty of goodies including a massive ‘X’ brace in the back.

With the Integras covered, it was now time to move onto the EP3’s.

This was rumored to be the biggest group of EP3R’s in any one place here in Australia, with 12 in total there is still plenty of room for improvement!

It will be sad to see the Gram lights go as this combo has really grown on me.

While everyone got busy taking photos, some owners stopped to chat and compare setups, it seems the topic of the day was intakes.

With 12 Civic’s and only 9 Integras in total, the EP3’s won the day!!

These quirky looking hatches don’t ‘hard park’, take one of the best chassis that Honda has ever produced, add in some upgrades to the suspension and brakes like these Spoon calipers and you have one angry little terror that could take down a lot of bigger dogs out on the track.

Milano red is a very rare colour in this generation, amongst a sea of white it really stands out and draws your eyes in.

This car is arguably the last true type R from Honda, the newest generation hatch is known as the soft version in comparison.

Why are so many people in love with the red ‘H’ and all it stands for and why do some love to hate it?
For many they love the level of engineering and the ‘underdog factor’ that comes from owning one of these high revving 4 cylinder engine.
The hate factor can almost certainly be put down to the ‘fan boy’ factor that is associated with Honda enthusiasts.

My last shot of the day, a perfect facelift DC5 sporting the Club ITR sticker on the windsscreen.

JDMST :: That Time of The Month

Saturday night was the first JDM Style Tuning Meet for the year and so I eagerly headed out straight from work to the Bolte bridge.
I usually end up getting to these things pretty early and this time was no exception.

I was nearly an hour early and the sun was already starting to set, this wouldn’t normally be a problem but I had left my tripod at home!

With only a handful of cars at the meet, I wondered if it would just be a small gathering. Regardless, I started snapping away at this AWD Mitsubishi Verada.
Now i have never seen one of these ‘tastefully’ modified so this was a very fresh experience.

Not long after the official start time some of the ‘Drift’ kids from the west had arrived.

Some of the most simple and clean rides in the state, you really don’t need to go crazy modifying your cars’ appearance to make something stand out!

One car that has really dropped in popularity with modifiers is the Toyota Soarer, that is almost certainly a good thing as we now have examples like this running around.

Every bodies favorite… Frush!

This meet was full of surprises, this was no mirage it was indeed a nicely executed Mitsubishi Mirage!

One of only two rotary’s attending, one very sexy black FD RX-7.

The meet was gatecrashed by a few cars from Tasmania, including this tasty Supra and an Evo.

I would be hard pressed to pass up a Nissan Gloria, one of the best VIP cars to come out of Japan.

Perfect fitment!

And a perfect badge!

Everyone had sufficient tofu supplies thanks to this awesome little hatch.

Boosted coffee! This tough little Suzuki got quite a lot of attention when it arrived, thanks to a flutter from it’s BOV.

Classic Toyota’s are easily the most gorgeous cars to come out Japan pre 1980’s.

Fenders mirrors are also a must for a Japanese classic!

After much deliberation… I have decided this is my favorite Civic coupe in the state!

The EM1 is one of Honda’s best shaped Civics, add some nice wheels…

…Suspension and drop it on the ground, you have yourself one incredible looking car like this one!

Here is a wheel choice I have never seen in 4 stud before, TE37SL finish this VTI-R Integra off pretty damn well!

It’s not how you stand by your car… This EG Civic was sitting very, very low!

Loved the plates, all eyes were on these girls.

One impressive little car was this Daihatsu, bagged and all!

As much as the fitment and stance kids are against airbag suspension, it really is a practical solution for a street car.

Unfortunately this car got some unwanted attention on the way home, the car received a defect notice from the highway patrol.

Another Civic ticking all the box’s.

Theses wheels look great on nearly anything.

Can’t help but have some ‘P’ plate envy towards this cars owner, my first car was a rusty bucket compared to this clean Accord.

There was quite the variety of cars with a couple of rare ones like this Nissan Micra.

Even more Civic goodness, this perfect ED sedan was putting it’s roof racks to good use.

Bringing along a custom bike to the meet.

I don’t really understand what goes into these bikes, whenever I see one I just can’t look away!

One Civic to separate the masses. One of Honda’s best performing hatches with a form over function approach to modifying .

It certainly is different and that’s never a bad thing in the sea of modified cars.

JDM front Integras aren’t new, but I’ve never seen one in yellow before and it was like falling in love all over again.

Hands down this 180SX stole the show during the night, making an unmistakable racket….

Sporting a Toyota V8 swap!! This would be a lot of fun to drive around and see the confusion on the faces of passers by.

Not long after the last car squeezed in under the bridge the light quickly faded.

There are talks of another location for next months meet, as this one is quickly filling past it’s capacity.

Another great night for Melbourne’s modified rides, there really is something for everyone at each meet.

Grip Shift Slide :: 155 Days In 30 Pics.

In less than just 48 hours 2011 will be over, bringing with it a whole new year of race days and feature cars that will be gracing these pages for your viewing pleasure.
In just five short months we have grown from the very humble idea between Grant and I in our seedy motel room in the suburbs of Sydney last August, to seemingly overnight having a blog covering local events and cars with over 1100 followers on Facebook and 1000’s of visitors each week.
Here is a quick look back on what Grip Shift Slide has done in 2011…
Five Months, One Hundred And Fifty Five Days… Thirty Photographs.

Pan Speed RX7 – World Time Attack, Eastern Creek Raceway, Sydney.
Having a project like this has helped us meet some amazing people and gain access to some pretty incredible events, shooting at the World Time Attack is easily my favorite automotive experience. ( besides riding shotgun with Nigel late this year)

Jawsh Rogers S14 – Winton Raceway, Melbourne.
Shooting regular drift days has become a big social event. Each time I attend one, I seem to talk to someone new and find myself in an ever growing circle of friends.

Mad Mike’s Red Bull RX7 – Tectaloy Drift Challange, Eastern Creek Raceway, Sydney.
I’ll never forget the haunting sound of Mike’s quad rotor screaming in the distance as it approached the first corner that night.

R32 GT-R – Calder Park Raceway, Melbourne.
Along the way we have snapped some pretty interesting cars even just in the parking lots at some events.

Ken Block Australian Tour – Calder Park Raceway, Melbourne.
Seeing some of the biggest names in the automotive world perform live was a huge buzz for us, to capture a moment like this makes it all worth while…
What with all the angry girlfriends, late nights, long drives and all the costs involved.
We still get a smile on our faces looking at these photos.

Australian Drifting Grand Prix, Round Two – Queensland Raceway, Queensland.
Sometimes we simply can’t afford the time off work or travel expenses, we thankfully have some very talented friends across the country.

Having someone else shoot for our blog was a little nerve racking at first, but sharing the love and workload was a great success with some absolutely top shots and event coverage.

At each event we attend, we try and focus on getting that one shot, that shot that makes or breaks the whole day.

We have witnessed some well deserved victories along the way, capturing a moment like this really shows just how much some of these guys want to win.

It’s easy to forget that all theses people pour their blood, sweat, tears and heart and more often than not gain nothing in return.

Sometimes I would be taken out of my comfort zone taking photos of cars I hardly knew, to say this year has been a learning experience would be a massive understatement!

Ender’s S13, Drift Attack – Calder Park Raceway, Melbourne.
A massive motivator has been finding our photos being linked and shared around the internet.

Stirling Wright’s R33, Drift Attack – Calder Park Raceway, Melbourne.
The support we have been getting from fans, drivers and event organizers has been overwhelming at times.
Just a few months ago we were ‘no-bodies’.
Now we are ‘no-bodies’ with our stickers on some cars!

Nigel Petrie’s ETS UTE – Engineered To Slide Headquarters, Melbourne.
Having the chance to shoot one-on-one with such an awesome build was an extraordinary experience, seeing the craft that goes into such a build was out of this world. Particularly seeing that it was built in a not so extraordinary space made it feel like such an achievement.

JZX100 ‘Camry’ – Winton Raceway, Melbourne.
Trying to get a photo while an owner of a car looks on can be a little awkward at times, as most owners are pretty protective of their cars.

Hardtuned.net Charity Cruise – Docklands, Melbourne.
Holding a massive camera is a great conversation starter and helps when introducing yourself to the owner of a modified car, as approaching almost certainly offends.

JDM Style Tuning, End Of Year Meet – Docklands, Melbourne.
Every event we attend, we get the same sense of excitement looking for a car that catches our eyes.

Azza Bird’s 180SX – Winton Raceway, Melbourne.
We are a pretty determined bunch here at Grip Shift Slide, we don’t take “NO” for an answer…
Sometimes getting photos has required leaping of fences, trekking through vast valleys in the forrest or simply walking around a bloody huge track.

Rob Roy Hill Climb – Melbourne.
The year has brought us some interesting cars and racing events, with Rob Roy Hill Climb and Vic Rally being high on that list.
We never truly get to appreciate some of the classic cars doing what they’re built for… Driving really fast!

JDM Style Tuning, End Of Month Meet – Docklands, Melbourne.
Meeting owners and finding cars to feature has only been a recent development of our site, so far we have been met with open arms and met some very interesting people.

Q Scan’s GT-R – World Time Attack, Eastern Creek Raceway, Sydney.
Seeing incoming traffic from countries all over the world has also put smiles on our faces, eagerly checking site stats early in the mornings before work.
It keeps us going through our boring 9-5 days at work, just so we can get home and edit some new photos.

Tom Monkhouse’s 180SX – Australian Drifting Grand Prix Round One, Calder Park Raceway, Melbourne.
Sending stickers across the country and occasionally the globe has kept us very busy offline, not only do we get a thrill seeing our stickers on a car but the small amount of profit helps us get to events and buy our camera gear. every cent helps!

Classic Japan – Yarra Bend Park, Melbourne.
Our Facebook page has been a massive success during our time online, with loads of fans eagerly checking each day.

Holden Hurricane – Autoclassica, Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne.
We hope that flooding you guys with tons of pics from each event keeps you entertained between boring status updates, logging on and seeing the network of fans grow and comment as people tag each others cars has been a great thing for us to watch.

VW Scirocco – World Time Attack, Eastern Creek Raceway, Sydney.
There hasn’t been a single dull moment working on the site, there is always something happening behind the scenes.

Pile Up #4, Hot Rod Show. Doncaster, Melbourne.
2012 will see the launch of our online shop, making it easier to grab stickers and future merchandise.

JDM Style Tuning, End Of Year Meet – Docklands, Melbourne.
Designing T-shirts is something we have been doing of late and hope to have something out early next year.

Rob Roy Hill Climb – Melbourne.
Onwards and upwards, we have our sights set on some big things next year and hope to become a household name when it comes to modified cars in Australia!

Nigel Petrie 180SX – Winton Raceway, Melbourne.
Definitely up on my list of people to thank for the year is Nigel, from the first time I spoke with him he always had a moment to chat.
Suited up in race gear and in uncomfortable warm weather he never seems a million miles away, happily chatting to fans and other drivers.
Without Nigel’s friendly and helpful nature, we would not have had such a great success with this site in the short time that it’s been online.
Thanks for all the help along the way, here’s to another great year of drifting in Australia.

JDMST :: End Of Year Meet

With the end of the year fast approaching JDMST.com Vic members banded together to have one last bash. With the turnout expected to be pretty good, Grant and I eagerly headed out after work.

There were a few cars in attendance that are becoming quite the star of the local scene, one being Heath’s wicked Datsun Wagon.

This was the only mx5 that came to the meet and in blue too! It was great to see something a little different to the rest of the crowd.

What started as around 20+ cars spiraled out of control when it seemed that the meet got invaded by the local Ozhonda community.

Some Honda’s ranged from the meticulously clean to the more ‘USDM’ inspired with roof racks and all!

I think that that the AUDM circle headlights are growing on me a lot, now that every man and his DC2 Integra has a JDM front end conversion.

The common trend among Melbourne cars at the moment and I’m sure most cars around the world is ‘fitment’.
Having unique wheels with aggressive offsets or getting the wheels to sit as flush with guards as possible is the aim here, trolling through the internet I think most of Melbourne’s modified cars are getting this part very right.

Flush, tight and sweet, just how we like it.

Drift pipes are becoming very popular over here, loved the sound of this R32.

The Honda’s certainly dominated this meet, followed closely by Mitsubishi Evo’s. At one stage I counted around 15 Evo’s.

White and black were the choice of colour for the Evo’s, checkout this line up of spoilers.

Nice list on the back of this one.

In total the meet had around 130 cars, it’s a rare site to see such a large group like this in Melbourne and it didn’t go unnoticed by the local ‘boys in blue’. Thankfully most attending behaved well and there weren’t any incidents with the police.

This Supra is clean!! It puts most new model Supra’s to shame, nothing tasteless here.

This Skyline’s owner went out of his way to get a matching yellow sticker for his windscreen.

The location looked like a shopping center carpark during Christmas, the small path around the cars became blocked pretty quickly too.

One very nice looking Evo X.

The award for the most modified car goes to this incredible FD Civic, sporting Carbon everything and a K20 swap it had a crowd around it all evening.

The location was spot on and is easily the best place to hold a meet of this size, I personally would love to see a car show held here in the gritty docks of Melbourne.

The loudest car was this Subaru RS Impreza, it was a bit of a love hate relationship with those who attended. Some loved the sound while most fell to the ground having seizures it was that loud!

Sprint Hart CPR’s and wing lifters made this EK Civic stand out, little touches that the Americans have been doing for awhile are making there way here. keeping the modified scene fairly fresh.

The three black Em1Ccivic coupes stole the show at the beginning of the night, they looked so good together. All in the same colour and ride height!

What a line up!

For some it’s a way of life.

In the words of Dave Chappelle during the Rick James skit “darkness is here, darkness is here everybody!!”

The crazy FD Civic again, loved those Carbon fenders.

Hello Domo!

Hate it or love it, roof racks are here to stay it seems.

Another impressively clean Evo.

It seems that it’s still pretty cool to be fashionably late, a group of Skylines arrived a bit later and stole the show.

Especially this menacing R34 GT-R.

Mitsubishi Legnum is a very rare sight on the streets.

The Skylines looking down on the rest of cars.

No one had any idea this end of year meet would become the monster meet it became. The crowd was great and it was a pretty positive gathering for the local scene. Only a few bad eggs at the end made some noise as they were leaving and the police made their presence known but didn’t flex their muscles at all.

It was a great way to end the year and I can’t wait to see what’s in store next, with loads on the drift calender and the World Time Attack in August as well as some regular feature cars, there is plenty going on!

Hardtuned Cruise :: Not Hard On The Eyes

Today the boys and girls from Hardtuned.net held a charity cruise from the Docklands to Lysterfield Lake, I managed to wake up early enough to attend the meeting point.
The weather was less then perfect and for a while on the freeway heading in I thought about turning around and heading home!
Luckily I didn’t, as the turn out was huge with around 50+ of Melbourne’s finest JDM rides rocking up for the event.

All of these cars made the long journey to Australia in a container just like the ones in the background, so it seemed very fitting to be taking photos next to them.

This location makes for a great backdrop and I love getting shots of a car with its owner.

This very cool RX-7 has been doing the rounds at the latest Vic Drift Members Day.

Loved the wheel choice on this four door R33 Skyline.

If the owner of this Nissan Stagea trekked down to Melbourne for this meet, then I am truly impressed!

One angry looking S15 Silvia.

By 11am the amount of cars was getting a bit out of hand for the small empty lot.

The caliber of attending cars was impressive, all had great wheel combos and nearly everyone had perfect fitment.

A very USDM LS Integra, I like this dedication to a certain style and respect anybody who follows something like this and pulls it off.

Loving this “Big Mac” S13! This was tearing up Winton on the last Vic Drift Members Day for 2011.

Separated by a generation these Skylines look more alike than any other model.

Bringing sexy back in black…

This is one car that took a while to grow on me, the rear quarter windows are the real winner for me in the end though.

One of the best cars there was this amazing 180sx sporting ‘ACT’ plates and it was killing it with these aggressive wheels.

So much rubber…

Here’s that awesome four door R33 Skyline again. This is the first four door Skyline that I have really appreciated.

A touch of class and a whole lot of baller, this Lexus sits perfectly on it’s gold BBS rims!

Polished Meisters? Yes please!!

Some pretty nice rides from all the Japanese stables here, except for Toyota. Not a single Toyota was at the meeting point.

A V-Spec GT-R looking pretty mean.

The parking arrangement made for some pretty nice shots, loved the ‘Illest’ sticker on the lip.

Such distinctive styling, this is still my favorite Skyline shape.

Great colour on this series 2 S14!

Such a bright colour amongst a sea of greys and whites, this 200SX had some pretty interesting sticker bombing on it’s rear bar.

Melbourne has been hiding all these lovely imports somewhere, look at them all!

My favorite shot of the day, the dark sky above almost makes it look like the sun is setting.

‘Frush’ is really popping up everywhere, it’s great to see the local car community supporting one another.

Tough on wheels.

Not many cars work well in two tone, this Silvia was an exception.

The twin tone horns make this WRX look very menacing.

S14 away from the pack, lucky for me though so I could get this awesome shot.

That killer 180SX again, loving the rear.

Great subtle colour on this drift RX-7.

Half way through the meet, a bunch of promo cars from Red Bull Mobile pulled up.

A crowd gathered pretty quick to score some free cans.

Then a generator was cranked over and a DJ started playing some tracks…

While this dance crew started break dancing, it really was very bizarre.

No one really had a clue what was going on, most enjoyed the show though.

Some of the moves where pretty impressive and just as quickly as they had appeared, they were gone!
After all the excitement everyone jumped in the cars and made their way for the cruise destination, I decided to call it a day and head home.

This was by far the best turn out I’ve seen in a very long time, Melbourne pride!

JDMST EOMM :: Hoodie Weather

On Saturday, members of JDM Style Tuning gathered at Docklands for their end of month meet. However, the weather was not on our side. In typical Melbourne fashion, the heavens opened and the rain just didn’t stop! That did nothing to dampen the spirits of all those that showed up and we were rewarded with a fine selection of JDM machines.

Evo’s were by far the most popular car at the JDM meet. This example had many subtle carbon fiber add-on’s.

Mark III Supra. You could tell by the sound of it that it was hiding some extra horsey’s under the bonnet.

The Bolte Bridge is always a favourite for car meets and impromptu photo shoots.

With a feel of luxury performance, these Liberty’s have the best interiors and make a great daily drive with plenty of punch.

Despite the weather this meet was huge ! I have been to car meets where it is sunny and only half as many people show up!
It was impressive to see so many enthusiastic car lovers. We here at Gripshiftslide can only hope to see more of this type of thing come 2012.
