It’s been a while since we have attended such a big car meet! Held in docklands Victoria, in a spot where only three years ago the police blocked off the road, car park and all exits to create a massive defect station. Thankfully that did not happen this time around.

It wasn’t only humans in attendance! there were at least five k9’s that we know of including this husky! I arrived early to beat the traffic not knowing exactly how big this meet was going to get.

At first it was raining lightly and I thought this may stop many from bringing out their pride and joy. Regardless the cars started to stream in like its was boxing day sales.

Most creative exhaust award goes to this little Nissan micra! unfortunately it didn’t sound like star’s not that I know what stars sound like!

This has to be one of the best combo’s I have seen on this model of Celica ..period. The wheels work well and the ride height is spot on!

A lot of attendees drove straight past the meet point opting to park outside the area just in case the boys in blue turned up. Luckily there was no trouble and everyone behaved themselves.

Amongst the sea of cars many were showing of their ability to ride static at dangerously low heights, the others that were riding on air came in low and scraping.

Suddenly a wild DeLorean appeared! iconic film cars are in hot demand right now but the DeLorean is one car that will never loose its luster.

These are no angel eyes, they are straight up devil eyes! happily sitting upon an aggressive set of Work Meisters.

An odd couple I found posing together was this WRX and its brother from another mother. Every so often I came across some cars posing in the spot light, waiting for admires.

With so many quality cars it was hard to know what to take a closer look at. Yet when this BMW rolled in everyone took notice! heads snapped so quick it was like a thunder clap.

There were so many nice cars on show that some super clean cars got ignored. I caught a few hiding between cars and people.

Look closely and you will see some interesting features on this R34. Custom LEDS built into the front bar, mirror and shaved lines combined to make this R34 one of a kind.

Vinyl warp is taking centre stage lately, this 86 was no exception. The brightness of this blue almost paralysed a few people! The way this vinyl refracted light was very impressive! to say the least.

I was very surprised to come across such a well modified WRX. With a serious hint of stance and nothing but quality parts decorating this sexy Subaru. It was hard to not be entranced by its beauty.

Tucked, sitting only millimetres off the ground. Dressed in white with a few hints of red and gold this show stopper continued to stun onlookers for hours.

The king of the streets! the mighty Nissan GTR. This car meet had more variety than a two dollar shop. With super-cars, classic cars, track cars and daily drivers what more could you ask for.

Not all the cars where lowered / modified. Some classic cars had entered under the radar. This VW beetle was super straight and in perfect original condition.

A throwback to late eighties touring car livery’s, this E30 was looking the part and turning some heads.

Another car that pulled a crowd was this super sexy RX7. As soon as it arrived people were climbing over each other to take a closer look.

Packed and ready to go? or just trying too look part of the scene? Regardless its an interesting approach to a style that has been creeping its way into the Melbourne euro groups lately.

With 4 levels full of cars there was a hell of a line to exit the car park. Only a consistent trail of brake lights could be seen for at least 30 thirty minutes while the crowd of cars left the huge car park. The Melbourne car meet group continues to build momentum whilst not compromising on quality. We hope this trend continues, it almost seems as thou MCM is a breeding ground for 100MM entrants and that’s ok in our book!

What better way to start off the new year than with a big car meet?! Held at Moorabbin Super Centre this Facebook only event had huge numbers confirming their attendance. All were there to show off their rides whilst supporting the great charity Beyond Blue.

The first car that really caught my eye was this uniquely painted Chrysler Sigma Scorpion. It was airbrushed in a military aircraft style complete with rivets and imitation surface rust.

At first glance I thought this was a modified Mitsubishi Starion! As I got closer I was shocked to find that this was a Chrysler. With the classic standard wheels dressed in matte black the car is not screaming for attention yet the paint work really draws you in.

Although this car meet was mainly made up of Holdens and Fords I chose to focus on the imports and cars that caught my attention. This R34 decided to create his own car park as the space was seriously getting limited.

The award for attention to detail has to go to this Hz Holden panel van! It featured a shiny new V8 that was cleaner than most cars in attendance.

The cars continued to roll in! This immaculate 86 flew past bringing with it many new cars to the meet.

The pair that really stood out for me were these amazing 86’s. Both had their own style and both were real neck breakers.

It’s the small details of a car that really give it personality. Take for instance this Snoop Dogg air freshener which helps give the car some attitude. Unique air fresheners are becoming popular; our friends at Saint Side have all the gear to make your car stand out.

An automotive icon, the Toyota Supra, is a car that will always stand out even if it’s not painted in bright yellow! It has most likely the biggest ass on a 2 door car you will ever see! This along with its performance makes it a true modern day classic.

Pretty much sex on wheels.. so lots of people are not into stance but you have to respect the look of this immaculate 86. With iconic Work Meisters wheels and a beautiful static ride height it’s hard to believe how this car can be driven daliy with out any guard damage.

Want to make your Commodore and your bike stand out? Vinyl wrap them in blue camo! Wearing some funky star shaped shoes this Holden had a style all of its own.

I was surprised to see this type 3 VW at a car meet like this. Usually more suited to a Euro meet it was great to see a mix of car makes on show.

A true combination of modern and classic merged together this interior is very individual while being subtle at the same time.

Modifying an Audi takes balls. Not only is the car expensive but also the parts! In saying that this looks great and we wish more people would make their Audis look dope.

There were lots of cars that turned up and I mean lots of cars! With 4 car parks full the car meet scene is starting to heat up again this year with plenty of new players.

Luxury cars never looked so good. Dumped on its ass this Mercedes embodies extreme luxury with plenty of style.

Neo would approve of this paint job! Heavily airbrushed with heaps of detail! Although this style was extremely popular in the late nineties you do not see much of it these days.

Why take a Ferrari to a local car meet? Because you can! As soon as it parked a huge crowd formed and the questions started. So how fast have you been in it? Does it get you the ladies?!

As the Boxter becomes more affordable we will soon see a lot more modified Porsches on the road.

The purple engine bay adds a lot of character to this s15. Dressed all in white with some classy gold wheels and a nice kit it’s hard to walk past this beast without a second look.

As the sun went down the cars started to leave and what was left? A genuine Tommy Makinen Evo that had been hiding behind the crowd of Commodores and Fords.
This was the biggest car meet I had been to in some time. It was similar in numbers to HWY yet with less trouble. It looks like there will be plenty of large car meets and cruises this year and we look forward to checking them out.
Thanks for reading,
Grant

Toyota Car Club of Australia Victoria hosted a demo motorkhana event at Toyota headquarters. If that wasn’t enough they also invited the 86/BRZ club and mr2 club to display their cars for a small show n shine.

This classic Toyota Corona was the first thing to grab my attention. With an interior that is not created out of plastic and some shiny bling highlights this little Corona looked the part.

If you’re an SW20 fan then you should appreciate how clean this one is. The Mr2 club bought out some of its finest examples to put on display here at Toyota.

Only Japanese royalty drive cars like these so I was very surprised when I saw one in the flesh. The 3rd generation Toyota Crown was known as the Super Deluxe Sedan and was Toyota’s classy ride of the time.

A car that is seriously becoming a collectors item is the Nissan Fairlady Z. It is one of the stand out cars of the last 50 years and Adam has carefully restored this Datsun to its full glory.

I could not take my eyes of this amazing car. It was perfect; siting on coilovers and wearing 15 inch RS Watanabes!

There were plenty of clean engine bays on display. It was hard to know which engine bay to dedicate my attention to.

Not only was there old Toyotas on display there were also some slightly more modern examples showing the old timers how its done.

I had never seen this type of tailight on the 86 before and I was more surprised to find out that they are made by Buddyclub.

The BRZ club turned up to display their cars and sit back to watch the motorkhana action unfold.

This WRX was driven by a motorkhana champion who definitely had some serious skills. I couldn’t believe how much punishment this car took while he redlined 1’st gear all day long.

This mighty Corona was one of the most entertaining cars of the day. Although the car is thirty plus years old it still made it round the cones faster than many of the more modern cars.

The crowd was really enjoying the motorkhana spectacle and this little boy was glued to the action like a moth to a flame.

James took the chance to shake down his new car by taking passengers around the course while working on the setup of the car. Because the day was casual with no real time pressure people had time to fiddle with their cars in between sessions.

The best thing about this open day was the fact that the public had the opportunity to experience the action first hand! This really put a smile on the face of almost everybody who was lucky enough to get a ride.

Along with the normal cars there were some specialized motorkhana cars which are designed to be light, nimble and fast. This one was known as the “Sweet sixteen” featuring a Toyota 4AFE 1600 engine and a big set of brakes made from many different cars.

The variety of cars on course showed the public that you don’t need a supercar to compete in this sport. As long as you can steer your way through some cones and purchase some low level safety gear you are good to go.

It does not matter how old you are you can still enjoy motorsport! This motorkhana special only weighed 340kg. It also had a nifty little trick for stopping; with a small set of wheels at the front to stop the car from flipping forward during heavy braking.

Minis have always been a good choice for this type of event. With their short wheel base and nimble handling they make for a fun platform.

Specialized motokhana cars can often look more like an experimental car than a racing pocket rocket. As the crowds came and went you could tell that people were really enjoying the action on track.

With lots of cars on display and action on track the general public was treated to a fantastic free event. This AW11 was one car that stopped me dead in my tracks. Everything on this car was well balanced while being super functional.

The collaboration between a car club and manufacturer is something more clubs should try to achieve. Not only does it raise awareness about the club but it also changes up club events from your standard track day or car meet. TCCA is really doing some great work in the automotive community and we cannot wait to see what they come up with next.
Thanks for reading.
It has been a year since we last visited a rally and that is too long! I arrived with not much sleep and my gear all a mess then made my first step into the mud.

With only sneakers on I put on my brave face realizing that I would inevitably end up with wet feet for the rest of the day.

From early reports the drivers had been saying that the super special stage was like a swimming pool. Many drivers were preparing themselves for a day full of difficult conditions.

The right tyres and setup can make all the difference in a rally. You do not want your tyres to wear down early into a stage and loose grip. Consequently if the car does not feel right it can weigh heavy on your mind and affect your performance.

This was the second rally for the Race Recall Team in the “Hyundai Getz” and it was time to get serious. Even though their previous car was an Excel they are both very different cars.

The “Getz” is much taller meaning the centre of gravity is completely different and getting used to a new car often takes time. With all this in mind Jonathan was ready to drive the wheels off this little Hyundai. What the car lacked in show it made up with consistent speed and focused driving.

The Renault Sport Rally Team is one to watch! These boys are animals! The R3 Clio does not look like a fast hatchback but wow can these things move! With a young team at the wheel one thing is for sure, the current dominance of Eli Evans in the Honda backed team will not last for long.

Tom Wilde, alongside co-driver Bill Hayes really push the limit! Several times I saw the car nearly up on 3 wheels! Both cars in the Renault Sport Rally Team have a great aggressive driving style that really makes the team stand out among the crowd.

Jazz power! “I mean K20 power” Having such a grunty engine helps when you are trying to dig holes while winning rally stages. The super special stage had its good spots and bad spots. In this flat area there were only hay bales to worry about hitting and this caused everyone to excel in this part of the track.

The BDA Escort of Grant Walker Parts is one very impressive classic rally car. Not only does it look legit it also has an equally impressive sound to match.

Not everyone was lucky enough to have a marquee at the service park yet this Corolla had only just been finished off the night before and this was to be its first run in a long time.

This is an unlikely pair with only about fifty years between these two cars. From a quick observation it looks like modernization brings square lines and added width!

Nothing says secure like a high tension cable and a couple of locks attached to a tree. This N12 Silvia wasn’t risking being stolen before hitting the stage.

Even though the track was still wet it surprised me how much rock spray was coming off some of these cars.

When you hear that anti-lag in the distance you know that a serious rally car is coming your way. Standing on a precarious corner I watched the cars come directly at me then quickly grab grip and power through the corner. This particular WRX was shooting a bit of flame and I think it had suffered a ruptured exhaust because with every gear change it was dropping small clouds just behind the engine.

At the spectator point sat a rather large hairpin where many cars would bogdown and struggle to get the power on to exit. That wasn’t a problem for Tostevin and Adams.

Our very own gripshiftslide sponsored rally team, Wal Lee and David Lethlean, had made some major suspension adjustment for this rally and although their car looks like it’s running chopped springs at the rear it isn’t. The high front and low rear combination was helping to get more grip and weight into the rear end in the wet conditions.

Constant speed is the only way I can describe Eli Evens driving style. His pace through corners is exceptional!

There is nothing like the thrill of rocks being shot at you from a machine gun or be it a 4wd rally car! Even when you you think you have found a safe place the sudden onset of rock spray means you have to take the shot or duck and hide like a little girl…I did both!

There was plenty of action on the Saturday with some decent jumps and better weather. This VH Commodore has not seen this much air since jumping train tracks in the 80’s.

Such a classic rally car! This WRX was flying and not only making good time but also entertaining the crowd.

The unstoppable team of Neil Bates and Taylor were at it again! Winning seems to be in Neil’s DNA.

The sound of this Mitsubishi Evo was truly terrifying! imagine a dragon that has just been attacked by a bunch of savages with swords! The sound was something like that, with added missile like stones being sprayed at the same time.

Polaris and Can-Am is growing force within rally. It is one of the easiest ways to get into rallying, these vehicles are under $30,00 ready to race!

The only thing i do not like about the Polaris is their sound. With a sound that can only be likened to an angry vacuum cleaner! this not the sound i was expecting from these buggy like rally cars.

With the last round of this current championship upon us, it was time for the drivers to get to work. The pits were alive with activity and there were oil and tyre changes going on everywhere you looked!
There were also a few cars that made it to the track but would not start and so of course the drivers’ pit crews were running around everywhere!

Peter Vouyoukas’ R33 is always a treat to see! With its’ low, wide stance and bright concave wheels, this car truly has personality.

The new look Viva garage team! Catherine and Warwick’s cars have undergone a major make over and they look absolutely brilliant! Now with major sponsorship from RPower Motorsport, this team is sure to impress.

The drivers briefing went quickly and there weren’t too many stupid questions! The judges outlined that they did not want to see any scando’s, only good clean lines up through the clipping points, with room for door to door action – this would be what the judges were looking for.

Club class was out in force this weekend and there were plenty of well matched cars ready for battle! With a mix of new drivers and some well known drivers, out to make an impression running the wall at Calder.

Jason’s R31 LS1 beast was looking dirty but this sport is not all about appearances! This dude sure can drive, and with a super reliable v8 under the bonnet, not many people come close to matching Jason’s skill on the track.

Drift spectators are a die hard breed! Eager to see the action, these boys had taken their seats way before any cars had even hit the track!

Peter Vouyoukas has a lot of experience under his belt and has driven this layout at Calder many times. Being no stranger to this track means that you can push it that little bit harder than the others that are not so comfortable here.

The El-Haojli team know how to keep it tight on the track with seamless door to door action! Their style reminds me of the good old days of the insane drifters team.
Great proximity and intuition make the El-Haojli team a real spectacle to watch.

Now for something a little different Thomas Sabo’s street style s13! We love the graf work that covers this entire car! It really makes it stand out among the crowd.

After 10am the crowd really started to roll in and many took seats on the major corner, whilst others opted for a fence spot. This weekend saw the crack commentary team of the Weckem crew taking over the airways and putting on some of the best drift commentary i have heard in a long time.

DriftCat was out again in her amazing VH 601HP – LS1 twin turbo and boy did she rip up some tyres! Cat is starting to get more comfortable in the car and it wont be long until she is battling against the best!

Manuel Garginian doping the hammer the whole the way around this massive corner while showering the crowd in tyre smoke!

Aaron Dewar dropping some dirt after a little adventure off track. This evil machine he pilots possesses some serious steering lock and this makes his car extremely good in deep corners.

Warrick and Peter’s proximity was on another level and even being this close they didn’t manage to hit each other, even at break neck speed.

One of our favourite’s “Team Chaulkin” killing it all day long! Every member has their own intense style and a ‘no fear’ attitude and that’s what we like to see!

This is the best rookie driver we have seen for a very long time! Jared Smith has only been drifting seriously for the last six months and this type of talent is sure to see him rise into pro class very soon! Not to mention his immaculate 180sx stayed intact for the whole day without so much as a scratch!

Team Chaulkin’s David Trinh throwing the R33 out hard to hit that inner clipping point before the major corner on the circuit.

Matt Russell and his battle between Thomas Sabo. Matt Russell ended up defeating Thomas in this battle but Thomas is definitely one to watch in the future.

On the last corner, the drivers get a good glimpse of the spectators along the wall. This often makes them push up even harder near the wall which occasionally ends in disaster. With just one decent tap on the wall, a car can bounce back into the wall then run it until they come to a stop on the tyre wall at the end of the corner.

Standing at the wall you get to see the speed and weight transfer as the cars power along the wall. Many look like they are going to hit as they wildly throw the car at the wall then as they pass you get a nice spray of tyre bits up into your face! Now that is what I call motorsport!

Every driver has their own line in the corner and from this angle you get to see so many different approaches to the same corner that you would not see sitting in the stands.

Team drifting is getting a lot better in Australia lately and maybe this has something to do with the fact that WTAC is on the horizon and many teams really want to win best team at the techalloy drift comp.

Mr Trinh engaging warp speed! Its only a matter of time until the boys from Team Chaulkin get up into the pro division.

Mark Row from fast aperture photography seems to be at the end of a rainbow! Not sure but he may be constructed of gold!

Jason Ferron defeating Matt Russell! Only one battle stood in his way of winning Round 3! Prosnik is the man of the moment and Jason was ready to take down the giant!

The late rain brought the best out in Jason. With very challenging track conditions, Jason Ferron won Round 3 and came 2nd in the championship! He has been improving so much in the last 6 months that if sponsors would just give him a go we are sure he could take out the Australian Drifting Grand Prix!

Many describe Micheal Posenik as an animal behind the wheel and only really talented drivers can come close to matching the skill and raw talent of the great man. Micheal ended up second in round 3 but won the championship overall!

Since everyone seemed to be getting trophy’s and having photos ‘Choonga’ jumped in on the action and soon became somewhat of a media celebrity!
The day ended with the traditional celebration burnouts and expression session. We at Gripshiftslide had been busy putting the final things into place for our Chill and shine event that was to be held the very next day alongside Drift Attack at Calder Park and there will be more coverage of that coming soon!!
Thanks for reading,
Finally a breath of fresh air has entered Melbourne and brought with it a performance based car show. Not only has the organiser of this event brought together some of the best tuning shops and related business but also a huge range of Australia’s best performance vehicles.

Our friends at Martini Racing Australia had a great selection of cars on display. This amazing GTR was on loan from Charge Speed Australia. ( V-Spec Performance )

Martini had thought of everything, with a full blown race simulator at the head of their stall! Kids were forming lines just to have a go on the Redline Race Simulator. Martini had a great show of Ferrari’s with both old and new on display and they even threw some of them on the live dyno!

I soon found out where all the modern Corvettes have been hiding. You don’t see many on the streets and it seems a lot have been brought over here, modified and then tracked. This is one car that I wish the V8 Supercars would let into their competition. But we all know why they wouldn’t let the z06 Corvette in… remember what happened when they let the “Nissan R32 GTR” have a go!?

Our Friends at Road Track Rally brought down their time attack Mitsubishi Evo along with a few other special cars of theirs, to exhibit the full range of tuning and services they can provide.

This vintage speedway car caught my eye because I have been meaning to go to a speedway event for quite some time. I think it was the inspiration that I need to finally do so.

A true Hot Rod with flames and all! The performance industry covers a massive range of cars big and small, this being one of the more unique types of performance vehicles among today’s ever growing range of performance cars.

There is something about the new Camaro shape that I like, yes I know it carries a Chev badge, but it has such personality and prowess that it simply cannot be ignored.

This 86 was sporting a custom supercharger that tucked into the engine bay like meat into a pie.

The Honda S2000 is one hell of a car and is the choice of many famous tuners! You might find yourself asking why? Because the car held the record for the highest horsepower per liter for any NA piston road production car for 10 straight years. With a full Amuse kit this S2000 looked amazing! It is the first time I have ever seen one fully kitted up like this and I really like it!

Formula 5000 is madness and Jay Bondini is one mad bloke because he owns 2 of them! This is one beautiful Lola T332 and it has had plenty of great owners in its past. I’m so glad to see something like this on display here in Melbourne.

Now onto one of my favourite cars of this year; the 370Z. Blingwork Auto had a wicked display of cars, their 370z, with its sexy kit slowly seduced me every time I walked past.

A large range of engines were on display alongside the many other cars. Plenty of these engines were worked and are in development for upcoming projects.

Our friend Greg from Pirelli was kind enough to let me get up close and personal with their GT3 Z06.R Corvette. It has raced at the Bathurst 12 hour, Australian GT series and Victorian state series.

Up close you can see that this is not a normal road going car! Trofeo Motorsport and Pirelli have put a lot work into this Z06 and the 2013 Australian GT series. Pirelli is the control tyre for this season and everybody knows that it is the best tyre for the job. With some good results this season, Trofeo Motorsport can’t wait to get back on the track and hey will have their chance come July at Sydney Motorsport Park and GSS will be watching the results closely.

This crazy drag Camaro was big in every way, big power, big wheels, big money and it really did stop people in their tracks.

There were so many nice cars on display at this show that it was hard to know which way to look. I did find one way to look though; straight at this super clean M-series BMW!

Is this what brand new cars looked like in the 70’s? If so, I want one! Just to cruise around in and make loud noises!

How do you make one of the prettiest Skyline’s ever created look even more attractive? Wrap it in carbon and put it to work on the track.

When a car is so immaculate underneath, it needs mirrors to display this fact. Is it still a real functioning car? Or a trophy? Don’t get me wrong, I like the EH but this is taking things a little too far.

I dig concave as much as negative offset. When you add fancy colours in the mix, then things get out of control!

As well as engines and cars on display there were large setups of full exhaust systems laid out around the show.

Power and fabrication! This car show had it all! Just look at this engine bay! You can see the countless hours spent getting every detail just right.

Do you like wheels? We do! The range on display blew our minds. This is just a small selection of wheels that where on display at the show.

If you know your European engines, then you should be able to identify this one! I cannot because VW engines scare me…

This is one of two GT3 Audi R8’s on show, both of these cars looked marvelous sitting near one another.

With such a big show, organised in such a little time frame it is truly astonishing to see what can be accomplished when someone sets out to achieve a dream. Australia’s first ever International Performance Motor Show really did impress and our hats are off to the organisers! We hope that in 2014 they invite us or groups like us, so we can display modified street and drift cars to show exactly what the scene is capable of.
Thanks for looking,
Grant
