The boys and girls of Vic Drift were at it again last week hosting another practice day, this time at Calder Park.
This had originally been planned as a two day event, but with lower entries than normal there was a push for it to be culled back to only one day much to everyone’s disappointment.

Btu not to worry, as there was still plenty of people willing to get behind the wheel for the one day event and they helped to make the day a huge success and a lot of fun for everyone involved.

Group A was full of top notch cars and drivers despite being just a casual practice day.

Drivers didn’t hold back just because it was a practice day either and the speed of some of the entries was impressive to say the least!

Peter was blasting along the wall all day and the sound that his RB powered Skyline makes is enough to bring a grown man to his knees. It really is a treat for the ears!

We love to see an exceptional series 1 S14 being put to good use!

Michael and Jason with their V8 swapped Nissan’s were going above and beyond with some close action, especially through the huge sweeping corner giving the crowd plenty to see!

Another popular V8 swapped chassis is Aaron’s 5.7 ltr (570SX) S13, this thing is an animal and sounds ridiculously good!

Aside from the A group guys running amok there were plenty of improvements from the other groups all day and you really can see the drivers making progress over the day!

Gerald’s 180SX is one of our favourite street/drift cars, he’s done very well to keep it so clean and straight over the years.

Operation smoke screen was a great success!

Stirling’s drift patrol R33 is always a great sight for sore eyes. He is continually improving the car and his driving is coming along in leaps and bounds!
To follow Stirls in his Slide N’ Destroy Skyline head to his new Facebook page and show your support! –>> http://www.facebook.com/SlidenDestroy

Like any other Vic Drift day there were next to no delays between sessions, so the action was non-stop all day! If you have never been to one of these events before, we would encourage you to check out the Vic Drift website for an upcoming drift day near you.
http://www.vicdrift.com/site/

With a great day of skids done and dusted we will soon again turn our eyes back to Calder Park for the drift event of the year in just under two weeks.
If you have been hiding under a rock you have probably missed our updates, The Australian Drifting GP together with Formula D Asia are putting on one hell of a show on the 27th & 28th of this month.
The worlds best drivers are coming and we caught up with Daigo Saito the number one drifter in the world for a few questions before he arrives in Melbourne.
Follow the link —>>> http://gripshiftslide.com/2013/04/11/the-hot-seat-daigo-saito/

It seems we are a bit drift crazy here in Melbourne with so many drift days happening every month, it is great to see so many taking up the sport and supporting the club that supports you!
Until next time, Thanks for reading.

So just picture yourself in the following situation: Your Dad owns and runs one of the most reputable suspension businesses in the country and specialises in making cars corner faster and smoother. How would you rebel against him and the family business?
Well it would seem that the best way would be to purchase a 1985 Toyota Corona and then taking full advantage of your Dad’s knowledge and his generous parts catalogue to slam it to the ground!!
Jokes aside though, Chris (the owner of this fine piece of machinery) actually works along side his Dad, Brett, for Shockworks. They are a local company pushing the boundaries of what shock absorbers can do in terms of both comfort and performance!
This Corona is just a way for Chris to have some fun.

Chris’ Corona started out life as one of 500 bog standard SR models, aside from some funky stickers, a front lip, boot lip and special steering wheel it was still just a another Corona. (Before Chris started tinkering of course!)
Fortunately it was however, lucky enough to be equipped with a 2.4 litre engine which was also found in the same age Hilux. While this is certainly not the pinnacle of performance as far as engines go, it is a step up from the original Corona powerhouse offered in the other models and makes for a good starting point for anyone thinking of modifying this car for performance purposes.

Since taking ownership of the Corona, Chris has kept modifications on the conservative side. Simple additions such as a pair of TE71 fender mirrors, genuine Bride seat and a Nardi steering wheel have helped inject a bit of excitement into the 1980’s Toyota economy box.

Chris’ real pride and joy is his set of SSR Starsharks. There was a point in time where he nearly considered selling the wheels and believe it or not, it was actually Chris’ girlfriend who convinced him otherwise and he ended up keeping them. Phew!
The impressive wheels measure in at 14×8″ -15 for the front and 14×9″ -25 for the rear.

Behind the wheels the braking performance has been upgraded with twin pot brakes and slotted rotors. In the very near future Chris plans on doing something some will see as sacrilege and others will simply see it as a cheap way to put a massive grin on your face.
Chris currently has a complete SR20DE+T engine setup sitting in his shed, he plans on putting it in over the next six months.
Once the conversion is complete he will be trying his luck at a few drift events and depending on how the setup performs and if there is enough grip, he will also be putting the Corona through a few sprint days too!

During our shoot with Chris’s car we found this very chilled out dog and so we decided to get a few shots of the little guy enjoying all the attention in his own driveway.

This dog wasn’t shy at all and very, very photogenic!
He took us through a few casual poses, working the camera like a pro, before we decided to move on…

The owner of the dog said that he gets a little excited by cars driving off and would try to stop us from leaving by any means necessary and he wasn’t kidding!!
The stand-off lasted for what can only be described as the longest three minutes of my life. After a few meters of crawling up the road, the dog eventually returned home safely.

Now back to Chris and his love affair of all things 1980’s, Toyota and classic Japanese styling!
The road to this Corona has been a long and windy one, a chat with Chris revealed he has owned over 10 pre-1990’s cars including 2 AE86 builds and a MA61 Supra!!
All the parts on this Corona have been in Chris’ possession for long time and seem to follow him from car to car, Chris’ philosophy is simple – “Suspension, seat and wheels. The rest doesn’t really matter.”

Over the years Chris has learned a lot about the physics and some of the myths behind suspension tuning from his old man. Now he can modify and build his very own shock absorbers to perfectly match his car/requirements from scratch! How cool is that?!

Shockworks is still a relatively young company. Founded by Brett (Chris’ Dad) the company was built off his reputation as one of the best suspension and damper specialists in the country, with over 20 years experience!
His career has seen him tune suspension for many companies and cars, from the humble Suzuki Swift to models from the HSV and FPV line up.

All tuning and valving is done in-house using the highest quality shock bodies that the boys can find. As the months go on, the range on offer has grown massively with replacement dampers and coil overs for many models including BA to FG Falcon, Skyline, Silvia, AE86, Evo, MX5 and even the new Toyota 86!!
But the good news doesn’t stop there! With many more parts to come, including something for all the Honda owners out there!

During the shoot Chris chucked me the keys to the car and said “Your turn”!
So it was now time for me to squeeze into the kidney destroying Bride bucket seat and after moving several of my internal organs I managed to get the seat belt clipped in and the key into the ignition barrel.

My ignorant knowledge of older Japanese cars had me expecting the Corona to awkwardly cough and splutter into life, I was instead greeted by the smooth growl of the 22RE engine kicking over instantly! It was like music to my ears.

Once I had the car traveling over 20kph it became immediately apparent as to how low it actually was. The smallest dips in the road would catch me off guard and would result in that all too familiar sound of the rear tyres screaming as they caught on the fenders.

The ride was pretty stiff at first and I felt a lot of the cars’ true 1980’s character coming through in each corner. I also felt a bit reluctant to drive with a bit of ‘spirit’ and but had to keep thinking to myself ‘Chris knows what he is doing so surely this is not all this quirky little Japanese sedan has to offer.’

A hesitant push on the accelerator had me approaching the next corner at the full ‘legal’ speed limit and all the way through without touching the brakes. The term ‘handles like it’s on rails’ immediately sprang to mind.
Turning the car anywhere but the ideal line through the corner had me feeling like death was imminent, exactly like a roller coaster fighting to break free from it’s tracks. Whereas when I allowed the car to follow the line I found myself rewarded with a very fast and smooth run through each and every corner, even on the bumpiest of surfaces!!
The only flaw in the cars’ abilities was actually my own driving style!
(Since the shoot Chris has been messing with the shocks some more and says that low speed comfort has been increased dramatically! I can’t wait to give it another go!!)

So while this simple and clean sedan doesn’t scream for attention from the outside it still manages to break plenty of necks for anyone game enough to sit inside during a ‘fun’ drive!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Chris, his car and a strange dog.
We’ll keep this post updated once the new engine setup is installed and we’ll be sure to let you guys know about anything exciting happening at Shockworks HQ!
Chris would like to thank the following people…
“A big thanks to Brett at Shockworks for teaching me what I know and letting me raid the stocks when I needed something for this, Leigh at Inverse Tyres for always looking after me, the team at GSS for putting me on and my girlfriend Laura, for not just putting up with me spending every spare cent I have but convincing me to keep the Starsharks when I was considering selling them last year”
Thanks for reading,

Just a few days ago with the help of the team at Import Monster here in Melbourne, Gripshiftslide and Co hosted our first event, ever!!
Not really knowing what to expect and also relying on our less than desirable organisational skills, we weren’t holding our breath.
Here is the day through 5 different photographers lenses…

With a few months of planning and casual chats with Aaron from Import Monster he happily (read – stupidly) allowed us to host our little event at the ‘IM’ Factory in Melbournes eastern suburbs.
The idea was simple; invite people, cook sausages, sell clothing from stalls and race some RC cars… We could never have prepared for the actual turnout the event received!

The event kicked off at 12pm with most of the team arriving at around 10:30am to start setting up. We invited a few friends to come along to be part of our very first event including : Saint Side, Ilovedrift, De Croft, Driven Threads, WOT Hobbies and Immaculate Reflections.
By around 11:30am a few cars started rolling into the once empty street, by 12pm it was next to impossible to park on the main street and soon cars were pouring into side streets and factory carparks.
By this point we knew one thing… We needed more sausages!

One of the perks of hosting an event at Import Monster was that there was tonnes of cool wheels and Jap parts for sale on the day. This was just the outside wheel collection for all the stuff that wouldn’t fit in the shop!!

It wasn’t long before there were literally hundreds of people filling the tiny Import Monster driveway and we knew we had a hit on our hands.

Helping keep the cool vibe and fun we had Luke taking care of the tunes for over 4 straight hours!! Massive thank you goes out to this guy, word on the street is he forgot to ‘slip, slop, slap’ and looked like a lobster the next day.
Thanks Luke!

Across from the DJ we had WOT Hobbies with a makeshift drift track and heaps of cool RC shells.

These guys didn’t stop all day long and were the last to leave! A few people even brought their own RC cars along for a few friendly competitions with the crew.

Holden VE UTES are even finding their way into the RC drift scene now too!
We wish someone would actually build one to look exactly like this RC version.

We had plenty of cars make the trip from Geelong, Ballarat and even Bendigo!

Walking out onto the street everywhere you looked there were cars, people and more cars!
There were a few huffy sliders enjoying the wide industrial estate roads too.

Some cars managed to make their own parking spots on the grassy banks across the road. Here Todd’s Skoda wagon was looking great but will soon be looking even better after winning a $600 detailing package in our raffle/giveaway thanks to Immaculate Reflections.

After walking around for 30 minutes we found a few groups creating their own mini meets, we spotted this awesome group of Honda S2000’s.

We have to admit this one stole most of our attention. If the owner sees this, you sir, are doing it right!

Perfect and simple additions like classic bronze TE37 wheels make this S2K a massive neck breaker!

Further up one of the side streets this group of white cars decided it was a perfect opportunity for an impromptu photo shoot…

Obviously we were keen to hang around and see the result!
Somehow this sneaky black civic managed to squeeze in but we still enjoyed the lineup.

This is one of our favorite 370Z’s in Melbourne and we were lucky enough to have it attend our meet!

Even though the parking was scattered we couldn’t believe how social this meet was, everyone was mingling and hanging out.

One thing that surprised us given our strong Japanese car following was the amount of Euro’s that came along as well.

There was so much on offer and in the days after the event we have been seeing photos all over the web of cars we didn’t event see at the event! There was just way too much to take it all in!

One of the standouts was this Audi convertible, something you really don’t see a lot of here but it was certainly living up to the stance works sticker on the windshield with this perfect set of BBS RM wheels.

Fresh on the scene, Michael’s E30 wagon has only just recently acquired these new wheels and is already becoming a local internet sensation!

Now it seems Michael’s 2nd attempt at a daily isn’t exactly going to plan!

Hidden in a driveway nearby was the polar opposite of Michael’s E30 BMW. Now both cars are white and have some decent wheels, but the similarity’s stop there!
This one has a full roll cage, more suspension mods then you can poke a stick at and oh yeah, a Nissan RB30 motor!

Denis’s E30 is built for drift and only days after the engine was in and running the car was off to Winton for the Vicdrift summer matsuri!!

To make this humble little event catchy we decided to name it “Summerdays and Enginebays” so it wouldn’t have been complete without a few popped bonnets!

We spotted everyone chatting and checking out each others cars and setups. With the relaxed nature of the meet more people were taking the time to walk around and actually enjoy the cars on show rather than be ready with keys in hand in case the police paid a visit.

Some of the cars had a few surprises up their sleeves and the level of finish and fab work that some of these street cars had was astounding, Melbourne definitely had us very impressed!

Proving that it is still cool to be late at around 3Pm Thien brought down his unfinished Honda ‘K’ powered Mini, once unloaded of the trailer it was impossible to take a photo with out a bunch of heads peering into this little blue car.
This is shaping up to be one of the most exciting builds and we hope we can convince Thein into showing us a little more once it is close to completion.

We still can’t believe the amount of people that were there!

Back to car spotting we found Nick’s 86 now sporting a tofu inspired two tone colour scheme paying homage to the classic older brother.

The area isn’t exactly friendly when it comes to low cars and driveways so there was plenty of angled exits and shrieks of pain from on lookers when the all too familiar SCRAAAPPPEE!!! came from underneath the cars.

So this Corolla wagon is about as tough as they get, we can’t decide if it needs the red ‘A Team’ strip more or just a sticker that says “free candy”.

Dale’s rig when he is not drifting his Tuffcore purple 180SX.

Soon the afternoon was coming to an end and some of the crowd began to shrink.

So a last minute dash was in order to get as many photos before the day was done and dusted.

Aside from 50 million Toyota Supra’s and a few Skyline’s we found a heap of Honda’s made it out despite ClubITR having their end of year cruise on the same day.

Some more of that driveway carnage!!

This Chaser gets more and more track orientated every time we see it, now rocking a air intake, bucket seat and unpainted front bar… We are liking where this is going!!!

There was some of impressive R31’s parked together, these older Skylines are falling into the shadows as the years go by and newer models get cheaper and cheaper. Thankfully there is a dedicated bunch that are holding onto these older Nissan’s and for that we salute you!

I wondered if this 180SX will be at any future drift meets, we’re excited to see what it can do after it’s engine rebuild.

Even THE STU made it down for the afternoon, unfortunately after a few too many heroes the inevitable happened and the boys in blue came along.
They didn’t seem to approve of Stu’s ride height 🙁

We counted about 10 Supra’s so we were pretty happy with that!

Rolling in late in the arvo was this VIP Aristo, black and chrome is always going to work on big Japanese sedans!

This is why we can’t have nice things!!!
Up until this point, this was one of the best behaved car meets of the year but of course with huge numbers there is bound to be some idiots.
The downside is once the smoke has cleared only the real enthusiasts and business owners are left to be seen by all the law enforcement called to the scene after reports of burnouts and the dreaded word… ‘Hooning’.
With over 200 cars, only 3-4 idiots is a sign that Melbourne is heading in the right direction.
So we will endevour to host many more events just like this in the near future, so thank you to each and every one of you who made this day one to remember!!

Classic Japan 2012… What an event!!
This year it was held at Como Park using two full sports ovals, allowing for more than twice the amount of entries than that of last years show. The turnout was absolutely fantastic and the crowd was perfect!!

The event was hosted by the Toyota Car Club of Australia and entries were open to all Japanese makes/models manufactured before 1987.
All the proceeds from the event went to Beyond Blue so the event was raising money for an extremely good cause.

On the top oval we spotted a heap of Suzuki Mighty Boys, Nissan 240Z’s and this perfect red AW11 MR2.

Looks like this little Mighty Boy could deliver a lot more tofu than the original delivery car from the famous anime series.

One of the most iconic classic Japanese cars to receive the modifiers touch, the Datsun 1600 has been a favourite with enthusiasts both young and old.

This tidy blue example was sporting an SR20DET engine swap. So with a few extra ponies under the hood, this little sedan would put a massive smile on the face of just about anyone that got behind the wheel.

In a long line up of Corolla’s, this AE82 was looking great thanks to a little lowering and a set of period appropriate ROH wheels.

Further down the line we found ‘We Heart Cars’ competition winner Justin and his track attack Corolla, one of a few cars wearing one of our stickers on the day!
Get yours here > http://store.gripshiftslide.com/

After a quick walk around the event I think I can safely say that I am now infatuated with Datsun utes!
This rat rod inspired 1000 ute was a crowd favourite thanks to the matte paint and side exit exhaust.

Directly opposite there was this shiny green Datsun that won me over, it almost looked like a standard affair at the front.
Business at the front…

… Party at the back!
While the pipes might not work for everyon,e it does pay homage to the crazy place all these wonderful cars come from and here at GSS we welcome more influence from some of the wilder trends in Japan.

We have never seen so many 240Z’s at a single event before, with numbers close to the double digits it was an impressive sight.
Some absolutely stood out from the crowd though, like this immaculate red zed!

There was a touch of VIP on the bottom oval thanks to this Toyota Cressida.

Chrome low rider wheels worked a treat for the four door cruiser.

Brown is not a colour that comes rushing to mind when thinking of Japanese cars for me, here on this Corolla wagon however it actually works very well.
Also worth a mention was the showroom condition RX7 sitting by its’ side. I had a full walk around the car and it was perfect!

This two tone DR30 Skyline had me sucked in for awhile, like a moth to a light bulb there was no escape!!

Inside it was full of 80’s charm wherever you looked: ribbed gear boot, hard lines/angles and champagne gold/silver colour coding.
This is my kind of cockpit!!

The classic Japanese town car… The RT40 Toyota Corona!
This white beauty was covered in lashings of chrome and white walls, everything you could ever want in a 1960’s sedan.

Warning: This photo may cause increased heart rate and blood pressure in many of our readers, this is perfection at it’s finest!
This Datsun Fairlady 2000 roadster would be one of my ultimate choices for driving the famous Californian coastline…

… Manufactured from 1967-1970 it was ahead of it’s time as far as Japanese automobiles were concerned – reaching speeds of nearly 200Kph and a red line of 7,000RPM! Thanks to a lack of emission restrictions here in Australia at the time, all models delivered here came standard with the ‘competition’ upgrade which included duel carburetors and a performance camshaft.
This stunning beauty was matched with ridiculous performance for it’s price tag, at the time it was the cheapest in it’s class and continually won races against it’s more expensive rivals!

This is one of my ‘hero’ cars from the picnic at Hanging Rock event earlier this year! This club racer inspired Datsun 1600 really got me excited by all of these older chassis and made me appreciate the milestones they achieved in terms of affordability, performance in their time when compared with more expensive European and American cars.

KE70 friends!!!
One clean and one not so clean. The one on the right is the kind of car you wouldn’t let your daughter go out to the movies with.
Running a 4AGE 20v engine in RWD configuration mated to a Supra gearbox with a turbo for good measure, this small sedan runs rings around newer cars thanks to a healthy 147kw at the wheels.

Brandon and Dave’s Cressida’s were stars of the show with many older enthusiasts taking the time to see what the younger generations take on what an older Toyota should be.

Steve’s Sunny ute was looking great with all the other classic pieces of metal scattered around the oval. There were so many cars using the ‘rising sun’ to add a bit of character to their cars but none quite as large as Steve’s cover for his tray.

Hamish’s 240Z was definitely the shiniest car at the show thanks to a fresh paint job. only days earlier courtesy of DT Panels. With the paint now sorted, Hamish has a few more things to tick off his list before really showing it off.
With any luck in six months time we will be showing you a lot more of this car.

Heath’s 260 wagon came back for its’ second year at the Classic Japan show, now with new wheels and a lower ride height the wagon was looking better than ever!

Nothing comes close to wood grain interiors in terms of classiness.

The rear facing seats are still such a unique feature, this is our car of choice for the drive in movies next time.

Now for something on the rarer side, a Mazda Capella looking great on some dished out wheels!

Spotted a clean white AE86 with some Shockworks coil overs. These guys are quickly becoming a very popular choice for suspension amongst Toyota enthusiasts.

Nicks’ RX7 with massive fender flares, running a 12a turbo motor making this Mazda a little two-door rocket!

It seems classic car fans come in all shapes and sizes and even species!!

Now this is something we all enjoy… The mighty Nissan Skyline, the original circle taillights we love so much!

As a bonus this year there was a massive motorbike display in the middle of the oval, the same rules applied to the bikes.
Japanese makes and pre 1987 production only.

The Honda S800, Honda’s final roadster for thirty years until the recent S2000.

Automatic is for chumps… This is Hondamatic, the transmission of the future!
Well at the time it was very impressive stuff as it still maintained engine braking thanks to a unique design.

This was one of the most impressive cars on show all day, this KE20 had it all including a rebuilt motor, turbo, tough wheels and fender flares, you name it!

A name fit for a king!
The Toyota Crown received all the extra’s and was the pride of Toyota’s production line.

This little guy believe it or not is Toyota’s first ever sports car!
The Sports 800 was equipped from factory with a monstrous 34kw and could reach 160kph on a racetrack!!

One of the ‘S’ chassis underdogs, the Nissan S12. Sold locally as a Nissan Gazelle, we’ve never seen one as clean or as modified as this one!
This really is one of the shows not to miss so please keep your calendars clear for next years Classic Japan Show, with wonderful cars and a good cause there is no excuse to miss it a third time around.
We would like to thank all the organisers for inviting us to come down and take photos and sell some merchandise at the show, we had a blast and will see you all next year!
Thanks for reading,
– Gwyn.

The World Time Attack Challenge is one of the largest events of it’s kind and happens to have so much going on it needs several post for us just to give you a glimpse of what you may have missed.
In the skid pan area of Eastern Creek Raceway some of Sydney’s best street cars came out to strut their stuff on the final day of the WTAC.

From full blown magazine cars with custom airbrushing to mad street cars like this tough little Toyota Corona, this exactly the kind of thing we love to see.
This would have looked right at home in version of Mad Max!

Built to Order brought some truly awe inspiring cars with them, from this hoping Lincoln Town car…

To this mold breaking EG Civic hatch, with some interesting colour choices and some of the best attention to detail we have ever seen.

Have you ever been beating at the lights by a Honda with pink wheels?
You might be surprised when you pull up next to this little Civic, BuiltToOrder.co didn’t just pay attention to the outside when building this car.
They threw in a K20 engine for good measure too!

There was also another EG Civic with a slightly simpler approach but still just as much of a head turner!
With a paint job in a light cola brown and some wicked little 15″ wheels this car looked mean.

Another Honda with it’s ‘A’ game on, this newer EK hatch had some very impressive BBS RS wheels.
Off the shelf simply would not do so the owner had the wheels re-barreled to 15 x 8 +12.3 specs.
Not exactly front wheel drive friendly offset there!

The show and shine section offered everything from VIP styled cars to full blown dragsters.

The recurring theme was attention to wheels, so not surprising at all that the Built to Order boys had wheels on nearly every single car!

This MX5 got a lot of looks, it’s been a long time since we have seen one of these roadsters in any colour other than red!

These Corolla’s were hiding in the pack, big fan of the over fenders on the white one!!

This white S15 pushed the boundaries of dished rear wheels, the sticker on the window really hit the nail “I got 99 problems, but fitment ain’t one.”

The MR2 is a true underdog amongst Japanese ‘tuner’ cars, with some Ferrari like styling and a mid mount engine it’s always ticked some boxes for the boy racers but never really appealed to the masses.
This SW20 model on Work Meister’s is a more then a step in the right direction, the aggressive body kit and wheel choice breath some fresh air into the early 90’s coupe.

Purple wheels get all the bitc… ah hmm er, ladies.

Bronze Volk CE28’s and the blue details make this Silvia a winner, the number plates are epic too!

This tiny van was unlike anything else at the show, the Suzuki Carry Van’s engine had been replaced by a completely electric motor thanks to some extensive and clever work by Mark Taylor from Sydney AEVA.

Oliver’s S15 has become quite the internet sensation after having being shown on speedhunters and a few other blogs, the car did not disappoint us in the flesh at all!

There was also a touch of euro in the mix, this classic VW was a perfect blend of old and new styles with influences from the current trends…

Like the sticker bombed details around the tail lights and wider wheels finished the older bug of nicely!

Tessa whyte’s yellow R34 had a crowd of photographers around it at nearly all times, the car caused quite the stir moving from the pits to the show and shine area.

While it is not the main attraction of the event it really is nice to see that it got a lot more attention this year and the cars on display were all extremely unique or had an impeccable level of detail when it came to modifying them.
The crowd seemed to be a lot more involved with a lot more spectators taking a break from the deafening race cars to come by and check out some of Sydney’s street scene.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for a few more WTAC related posts still coming.
Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly Eastern Creek Raceway) was once again alive with the sound of rotary, boosted and N/A engines from around Australia and the globe, all battling against the formidable stop watch.

It seems that just like the lap times this year, the last twelve months have gone extremely quickly, since Gripshiftslide.com’s humble beginnings in a hotel just five minutes from the track at last years event.

Along with last years entrants, we too stepped up our WTAC game! While teams added crazy aero and chased lap times in preparation for the two day event, we brought a crew of four up from Melbourne to get as much photo and video content as possible and even run a stall over the entire weekend.
To say it took a toll on us, in between our 9-5’s, would be an understatement!

Now just over a week has passed since the mind blowing racing that took place in Sydney and we can tell you now, the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge did not disappoint one bit!
With a host of high profile teams traveling across the globe to our neck of the woods to battle it out in an almost out of this world experience for any time attack/automotive enthusiast here in Australia.

The sole WTAC NZ entry from last years race was once again the lone NZ car on the track this year. James Winslow drove the Team RevolutioNZ EVO 8 to a very respectable 11th overall with a 1:33.4118!

The pit lane was always alive with energy with teams scurrying around cars and getting ready for each session, Russell Cunningham and his crew worked tirelessly and came home with a 20th position out of 52 cars is no small feet!! Their R32 GTS-T Skyline ran a 1:38.5710!

To the casual spectator it’s is hard to truly appreciate how fast/hard these drivers push their cars around the high speed circuit, as with most motorsports the faster the car the more tame it looks around the track.
It is however a very different story on top of ‘corporate hill’, here nearly every car is on the brink of disaster as they scream up and over the twisting hilly section of the track.
This was a common sight, one wheel losing contact with the track surface!! The BYP Racing Civic won the award for highest wheel lift, we posted a photo on our Facebook page earlier in the week.

The Tilton Interiors Evo mustered a blistering 1:27.1820 on Friday and spent all Saturday chasing their tail hoping to beat their own time, after such a fast time the car began to suffer as Garth Walden pushed on.
During the second Pro Class session on Saturday the Evo had a severe problem with the rear differential and lost all power to the rear wheels!! With the 800hp+ Cosworth 4G63 now powering only the front wheels there was a few hairy moments, the smoke you see is just the front tyres struggling with all power!!
Despite the issues the team’s hot lap from Friday was fast enough to secure 2nd place!

John Boston had his hands full at one stage with the Insight Motorsports Honda S2000, all the stress and hard work was worth it with the team placing 11th in open class! A very quick 1:36.2510!!

The black sheep amongst the other competitors and the crowd favorite… Queensland born Nemo Racing Evo was the dominating force at this years WTAC.
The car is a product of some of the best minds Australia has to offer, top that off with Warren Luff (A V8 super car driver) and you will get a lap time of just 1:25.0200!!!!
Blowing last years Cyber Evo winning lap of 1:28.8510 out of the water!!

Nobuteru Taniguchi had his work cut out for him, piloting both the RE-Amemiya RX-7 and the Topfuel S2000!!
Taniguchi pulled out all the cards and landed 5th and 6th spots in Pro Class, an outstanding effort and only a few hundreds of a second apart!
5th 1:29.0520 – Team Top Fuel Voltex S2000, 6th 1:29.8020 RE Amemiya RX-7.

The Road Track Rally team taped a Victorian license plate to the front of the car after placing 3rd in the clubsprint class, their lap time of 1:40.2530 was good enough to beat half of the open class teams!
We stopped by the RTR pit garage and the team were astonished with how successful their Evo X had been, expect some big things from these guys now they have a taste for poll position!!

One of the oldest Australian time attack cars and still evolving with the sport, the Hi Octane finished in a very respectable 7th 1:30.7732!
Mark berry drove the Hi Octane R34 and R32 in open class, the R32 finished in 6th place thanks to Marks very quick driving. 1:34.6620, only 4 seconds behind the teams R34 GT-R!!

This years open class entries resemble last years pro class cars so we expect some very experimental looking time attack cars next year.
The PSR Tuning Evo 7 came out in 17th spot with a 1:37.2230 lap time!

One of the most exciting sounding cars was the STZ Automotive V8 powered Rx-7, Marty Horvat drove the teams car to 23’rd in the open class with a sub 1:40 lap time… 1:39.9370!

The open class was full of Rx-7’s this year with 7 in total competing in this class!!!

In the 12 months since last years event this Evo X from Uber Motorsport has gone from a demo car sitting in the exhibitor section to a full blown competitive track car.
Adam Quinn drove the car around the track in a not too shabby 1:46.7350!

Anda Suzuki made some fine adjustments to his already capable Scorch Racing S15, sitting in the 3rd place until the Saturdays last Pro class session getting knocked out by MCA Suspension’s S13.
Suzuki managed a 1:28.3290 a full three seconds faster then last year, he and his team are still classed as a privateer entry too!!

While most returning cars shaved a few seconds off their times, the second entry from Tilton Interiors added a few seconds!
The little EG hatch was two seconds slower this year, Still quick by anyone’s standards the team achieved a 1:42.3970.

After teams came to grips with the track after a few sessions, it was time to head in and make some much needed adjustments.

The Top fuel S2000 struggled to stay in a straight line through the high speed sections of the track, this is to be expected when a car produces 700hp and weighs in at just 1010kg!!

It seems the saying ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ has no place at the World Time Attack, the open class saw 1st and second places both go to teams racing Evo 6’s!!
1st – Dominator Evo 1:30.7260, 2nd – Chasers Motorworks 1:33.4840, some super quick times from both teams!

It also goes to show that you don’t need a big budget or crazy aero to turn some heads at WTAC, Nick Adams scored 14th place in clubsprint in the Pulse Racing R33 GTR.
Some seriously good driving for a 1:47.6730 lap time.

The pits were buzzing with confusion and excitement as the Cyber Evo got dropped off at 4pm Friday… Things were not looking good for Tarzan and the team.
The car had an engine failure while being tuned in Sydney, after sourcing an engine to borrow the car was slapped back together and delivered to Eastern Creek as fast as humanly possible!

Now with only an hour worth of Pro class sessions left all eyes were on the defending champion to pull out a miracle and hold onto a two year winning streak…
Sadly this was not Cyber Evo’s years, the borrowed engine blew the main rear seal and began dropping oil the whole way around the track causing massive delays as the clean up crew got to work on the slippery surfaces.

In between sessions you could catch drivers getting some fresh air and sizing up the competition from the pit lane roof area.

The sun started to fade and the last cars pulled in from the final session.

Some photographers set up camp ready for the Tectaloy Drift Comp that follows after the award ceremony, with 100 media personal working around the track you had to find a good spot early to get the best shots!

Meanwhile the rest of the media and crowds huddled around the Advan trailer to hear the final placings, the 2012 winning car from Nemo Racing was also brought out into the crowd for the ceremony .

With all the awards given out, it was time for the big question…

… Which international drivers would return to try and reclaim the top spot at WTAC, Anda Suzuki was smiles all round and said he would do everything e can to come back and compete next year!
Tarzan also said he would not miss it!!
Thanks for reading, we have loads more coverage coming up including the Drift Challenge and more from the pits and show and shine!!
– Gwyn.

Toyotas! Yes! Finally we have something other than a Honda on the site!
The Corolla Sportivo is one of those cars you don’t necessarily associate with performance.

But despite the label this car is actually a bit of a gun! It had a bit of torque and like’s to chew tyres!
Six on the floor and a 141kw under the bonnet. The Sportivo was made from 2003-2005 and I would personally regard this car as the next best corolla after the AE92 gti.

Don’t get me wrong, it is no AE86. However, this little shopping cart has the goods.

Like the 4A engine, the 1zz/2zz engines are well built and put up with a lot of punishment.

We got close to the water, close enough for the cars to take a swim!

Docklands put on some good weather and it provided a nice quiet locations for us to shoot these two.

The following for the Corolla Sportivo has had its up and downs, but there is still a fair amount of respect for this car.

With pod filter, exhaust, full sway bar and stut-brace setup these stivo’s handle well and make for a great daily.

If only the supercharger kit was affordable!

Parking in the middle of the road is scary when all you can hear is B’doubles rolling around docklands.

You can pick these up relatively cheap these days, while the face lift version still remains a bit pricey.

The Integra Type R and the Corolla Sportivo are often compared….
Many Integra Type R’s have been beaten in a straight line by the Corolla… many may claim this fact to be untrue, but I can say I have seen it happen with my own eyes.

Alright who forgot to turn their wheels? Photo fail!! 🙂

Probably the best thing about this car is that it just looks like every other Corolla, so
you never draw too much attention from the Po Po in this little car.

The first time I saw one of these it was in Box Hill. It was black with the same modified grill, eyelids and was sitting low on a set of Rays te37 wheels. At that moment a thought entered my head “I wouldn’t mind one of these!”

Over the next few months we will be featuring some more unique and overlooked cars like these.
At this point I feel it is important to let everyone know that these cars are actually our girlfriends cars! We though “hey why don’t we practice night shooting with flashes at docklands” with their cars before testing it out on the real deal!
Thanks for looking,
Yesterday the hills were alive with the sound of sliders, some of the guys and girls from the huffyslider facebook group hit the streets for some afternoon fun.
We decided to gatecrash and try and capture some of the action.

The day kicked off in the afternoon with around 15 sliders taking part.

Just like the drift scene each slider had plenty of personal touches.

The speed these guys can get through the corners is unreal, with some of the runs over 2k long it can get pretty hairy with a large group.

After a run the bikes get thrown together onto the back of a ute or trailer to get back up the hill…

There was a lot!

Nearly every rider had a camera strapped on, I can’t wait to see some of the footage.

After the cars passed it didn’t take long for the ghostly sound of the bikes to cut through the silence, you can hear them far in the distance screaming down mountain for a full minute before you can actually see them!

Plenty of people came to watch, finding a spot to park was a bit tricky on the windy roads.

After a few more runs at the first location, a call was made to the local police.

The guys were kindly asked to move on by the ‘boys in blue’, the bikes got packed up and everybody jumped in a car.

Another location was organized and the team quickly got there and setup for a few more runs.

Within 20 minutes the crew was sliding again, the second location had some interesting corners.

This hairpin made for some awesome backwards entries.

This corner hadn’t been ‘hooked’ this well since the night before.

The hairpin also claimed a few of the riders, with a couple of spin offs on the first run down the road.

The sliders split into a few smaller groups as they came down the hill, one group in particular had a few tandem runs through the last corners.

Sometimes the brakes just aren’t that great coming down a hill like this.

Yes it really is as much fun as it looks!

This guy is hitting over 60kph on this little bike!!

It’s a long way down…

Thanks for the heads up!

This was an absolute blast to watch, I hope to catch a few more of these events in the future.
The guys are an extremely friendly bunch, if you want to take to the hills with them next time be sure to hit up their facebook page for updates on events and Huffy related news.
http://www.facebook.com/huffyslide
(I would like to advise that during these group sliding days everyone wears appropriate protection and follow strict guidelines if they ride with the group, there is constant radio communication and both lead and chase cars ensuring everyone is safe.)
Thanks for reading,
– Gwyn.
P.S. Extra photos will be on our facebook page in the next few days!

November saw Melbourne’s 1st annual classic Japanese car show, hosted by the Toyota Car Club
of Australia, Victoria. The event’s proceeds went to BeyondBlue to help fight depression, with 120+ cars on display the show was a massive success!

All the cars attending were manufactured before 1986, some of the ‘modern’ classics had some interesting cosmetic mods…

The true classic of our generation, the Toyota Sprinter.

Nardi’s seemed to be the wheel of choice.

Cressida wagon with functional roof racks, does it get much better?

A few rides had some wild engine conversions…

Like this Datsun’s SR20DET engine swap.

Mustang design cues?

Some cars didn’t have much in the way of looks from the factory to attract the younger enthusiasts…

Carefully choose some wheels and some accessories and bam! your car suddenly stands out from the crowd.

While this is not everyone’s cup of tea, I think the owner did a great job fusing the classic and current styles together.

One of the more modified cars at the event was this orange KE70 Corolla, I think someone stole it’s suspension tho.

I kind of miss all the chrome trims of yesteryear.

The R30 Skylines are increasing in popularity with young modifiers, thanks to some beautiful examples popping up on the net.

There were more pride building cars in those days, unfortunately most Japanese car makers have lost their way…

With quirky cars and loads of character, becoming a thing of the past.

The interior of this Toyota Century stole the show, complete with a TV and electric windows – all factory fitted!

And it’s official now… every car is at least 11% better with fender mirrors!

Now a Trueno coupe is truly a rare sight here in Australia.

One of the few Mazda’s at the event, this Rx-7 may have been a bit too wild for most. We liked it a lot!

Rear facing back seat in a wagon… no wonder people stopped going to the drive-in movies, they stopped making the right cars to go in!

One of the most tastefully modded cars at the show.

This Datsun killed it with a perfect wheel choice and ride height.

A very subtle and clean Levin hatch, I hope some 90’s cars will be kept this clean over the next 10-2o years.

This may have been lost on some of the older show goers…

I wish there were more tough utes like this, a little rat rod influence goes a long way.

Just like the FJ Holden this Isuzu shares a large detailed red horn, this type of detail is just not seen anymore.

All I can say is nice paint!

“Dad can I have one?” This looks like an advert from the late 70s.

With so many cars fighting for attention, it was hard to concentrate on one car

Seat belts, who needs them? Wait, what?! They can save my life! I better read this manual to see how.

Datsun, the car of the 80s, 180b’s were so common! This was the first time I had seen one in the last 7 years.

This clean datsun 1600 was in show room condition!

Classic Japanese cars always pull the chicks!

The crown, what more can you say.. its awesome!

One of the most beautiful cars ever designed by Mazda.

If only cars came like this from factory!
Thanks for reading,
